Meet The FattKatt,

Fattkatt plays the one and only, “Bad Kitty”, a “Hamer 335” guitar, which has Buck Owens’ and Red Simpson’s autographs along with Wanda Jackson’s.  He also has a 6119 Tennessee Rose Gretsch guitar with a Bigsby tailpiece. He plays through a Fender twin reverb amp. He likes a clean raw sound through his amp, and plays as close to the original 50’s sound that he can. That’s what sets our group apart from all others.

FattKatt's musical influence comes from the great musicians and bands of the 50's such as Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, and Chuck Berry.  FattKatt plays an energetic blues style guitar with a country swing.  Other favorite artists include Buck Owens, George Jones, Bill Haley, and Roy Orbison.  His most influential musicians have been John Lennon and The Beatles.

People ask, “Where did the name Fattkatt and the Vonzippers come from?”  Well, the name Vonzippers came from Eric Vonzippers and the Rats, a biker gang in the Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon beach movies. We didn’t have a full name, just the Vonzippers. But, we needed a first name for the band, because there was already a band called the Vonzippers.  The name Fattkatt came about one day when Don Grimes’ (our former bass player) cat, Hoss, walked by and Larry told Don, “Hey, you know Hoss is one fat cat.”  Then a light came on and Larry told Don, “That’s going to be my name  - Fat Cat.” Larry changed the spelling to Fattkatt, and that’s how we became Fattkatt and the Vonzippers.

Fattkatt writes all the Fattkatt and the Vonzippers original songs along with his good friend, Robert Soto, who is very good with lyrics.  Robert wrote the lyrics to Fattkatt in the City and also helped write the song, Bakersfield, which will soon be out.

Fattkatt and the Vonzippers likes to stay with the roots of the Bakersfield country sound that started in the 60’s with Mr. Buck Owens.  Day-by-day we kept trying to play at Buck’s Crystal Palace here in Bakersfield, and the day finally came when they called, and the rest is history.  See y"all at the Crystal Palace! Thank you, and God bless.  Fattkatt (Lorenzo Ybarra Jr.)
